Students face Apprentice-style interviews as part of ‘learn about work day’

Stowupland High School has hosted a “learn about work day” – with year 11 students facing Apprentice-style interviews throughout the day.

Students donned formal attire for the day, attending a variety of job-focused workshops.

These included lessons on how to write a CV, how to introduce yourself when meeting people face-to-face and how to maintain a professional online profile.

Students also took part in Apprentice-style one-on-one interviews, giving them practical experience of impressing a prospective employer.

Chris Sim, Deputy Headteacher at Stowupland High School, said: “The day was a huge success – the students really enjoyed the day and learnt a lot of useful skills.

“We wanted to give our students a taste of the working world, some real-life experience of facing an interviewer and introducing yourself to a potential employer.”

Joining the school to conduct the workshops and interviews on were representatives from a host of organisations.

These included the University of Suffolk, West Suffolk College, Suffolk County Council, the NHS, Suffolk Police, Larking Gowen, Real World Education, Sizewell C and RSM UK.

At the end of the day, the best performing students were selected to take part in another live interview in front of the school.

Mr Sim added: “Students had sessions on interview techniques, apprenticeships and alternatives to university, CV applications, creating a positive online presence – practical advice to help them in whatever they choose as a career.

“For many of them, this would have been the first interview they have faced.

“It’s a really useful experience, to feel the pressure so they are better equipped when it comes to doing one for real.

“The students rose to the challenge and really impressed the interviewers.

“I hope the techniques they have learned will give them added confidence when it comes to getting a job in the future.”
